American Airlines (Fort Worth) is investigating an incident yesterday with one of their Boeing 777s that is eerily similar to that of a British Airways 777 which crash landed in January. As flight 299 from Miami was approaching Los Angeles yesterday, one of the 777’s engines failed to respond to throttle commands for several seconds. The incident took place at a height around 2,000 feet as the aircraft was descending. Maintenance personnel have downloaded the flight-data recorder information and will examine the fuel tanks and engine fuel filters for possible contamination. Tests will also be carried out on the electronic engine control.
American Airlines utilizes the same engine on their 777s, the Rolls-Royce Trent 800, as British Airways does.
