Giornata memorabile a Houston lo scorso 9 Marzo: nello spazio di poco più di un'ora ben 4 aerei, 2 in partenza e 2 in atterraggio, sono stati colpiti da fulmini nell'area intorno all'aeroporto.

I due voli in partenza sono rientrati a Houston, il primo dei quali in emergenza a causa della perdita temporanea degli strumenti di bordo.

Chiedo agli ATC qui presenti: non era forse il caso di chiudere temporaneamente l'aeroporto o far evitare agli aerei in partenza/avvicinamento una determinata area?

A United Boeing 737-700, registration N24706 performing flight UA-1007 from Houston,TX (USA) to Bogota (Colombia) with 125 people on board, was climbing through about 10,000 feet approximately 30nm southeast of Houston's Intercontinental Airport at about 16:50L (22:50Z) when the aircraft was hit by lightning. The crew stopped the climb at 15,500 feet, declared emergency reporting they had lost everything (referring to instruments) due to a lightning strike right onto the nose of the aircraft. The crew subsequently requested delay vectors at 10,000 feet to burn off fuel before returning to Houston. The aircraft landed safely on Houston Intercontinental Airport's runway 09 about 45 minutes after departure.

Airport officials reported the cockpit filled with smoke following the lightning strike.

The FAA reported the aircraft received a lightning strike about 15nm out. Three more lightning strikes occurred in the same area at about the same time.

A replacement Boeing 737-700 registration N39726 reached Bogota with a delay of 4.5 hours.

An Expressjet Embraer ERJ-145 on behalf of United, registration N16149 performing flight XE-4637/UA-4637 from Houston,TX to Mobile,AL (USA) with 47 people on board, was climbing through 10,000 feet about 20nm east of Houston's Intercontinental Airport when the aircraft was struck by lightning at about 17:00L (23:00Z). The crew stopped the climb at about 15,500 feet and returned to Houston's Intercontinental Airport for a safe landing about 25 minutes after departure.

The flight was cancelled.

The FAA confirmed the aircraft received a lightning strike, 3 more lightning strikes occurred in the area at about the same time.

An AirTran Boeing 717-200, flight FL-297 from Atlanta,GA to Houston Hobby,TX (USA), was on approach to Houston Hobby's Airport southeast of the aerodrome when the aircraft was struck by lightning. The aircraft continued for a safe landing on Houston Hobby Airport's runway 04 at 17:55L (23:55Z).

The FAA reported the aircraft was struck by lightning on approach to Houston's Hobby Airport. Three more lightning strikes occurred in about the same area around the same time.

A Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88, registration N921DL performing flight DL-1832 from Atlanta,GA to Houston Hobby,TX (USA), was on approach to Houston's Hobby Airport about 80nm east of Houston when the aircraft was struck by lightning. The crew continued to Houston Hobby using just routine communication for a safe landing on Houston Hobby's runway 04 at 18:12L (00:18Z).

The FAA reported the aircraft was struck by lightning while on approach to Houston Hobby Airport.

The aircraft remained on the ground in Houston for more than 24 hours.

Facevo riferimento alla chiusura dell'aeroporto e/o di uno specifico settore. In quel caso dovrebbe essere l'ente di controllo ed assistenza al volo a decidere.

Non e' così che funziona,ovvero la presenza di un temporale non pregiudica di per se le operazioni di un aeroporto, l'ATC informa il Pilota della presenza di un temporale sul campo e il Pilota valuta se operare o no, diverso e' il discorso se si allaga una pista allora interviene l'autorità aeronautica in Italia ENAC in USA l' FAA e sospendono momentaneamente le operazioni e cmq non e' mai un compito demandato all 'ATC.

Confermo.
La presenza di un temporale inibisce unicamente le operazioni di handling, imbarco/sbarco.
Aggiungo inoltre che l'ATC (almeno per quanto concerne il nostro paese) non è dotato di radar meteo e che quindi tutte le valutazioni (se decollare o meno, dove e come evitare, etc) spettano unicamente al comandante del volo.
Soprattutto in caso di fronti temporaleschi le condimeteo sono soggette a variazioni così repentine che è praticamente impossibile determinare quali zone siano da evitare e quali preferire. La stessa pista in uso in genere cambia più volte al passare del fronte sul campo.
Infine, per concludere, la chiusura o meno di un aeroporto non spetta MAI* al provider (ovvero a chi fornisce i servizi di assistenza al volo), ma unicamente al regulator (ENAC in Italia)

*anche in caso di visibilità inferiore ai minimi previsti l'ATC formalmente non può chiudere l'aeroporto, ma tuttalpiù negare l'autorizzazione all'atterraggio.
