Norwegian ends Edinburgh-Connecticut service citing APD as factor

Norwegian is to cancel its nonstop service between Bradley International airport in Connecticut and Edinburgh, according to reports.

A Connecticut Airport Authority spokesperson said APD had played a part in the decision

Kevin Dillon, executive director, Connecticut Airport Authority, told US news site Eyewitness News: "Unfortunately, despite the strength of the Bradley business case for continuing the service, external factors have deteriorated the service’s viability at this time.
“The UK’s Air Passenger Duty, which is levied on passengers who utilise Edinburgh Airport, has had a debilitating effect on Norwegian’s business model.”
He added: “While we are certainly disappointed by the discontinuation of the Norwegian service, the CAA will continue moving forward with our strong partnership with Aer Lingus.
“The route between Dublin and Bradley has shown promising growth, and, after recent discussions, we are confident that the Bradley route is currently in line for an aircraft upgrade in 2019.”
A statement released by the airline said: "As of March 25, 2018, Norwegian Air will no longer operate its Edinburgh service out of Hartford’s Bradley International Airport.
"The decision to pull the route, along with decreasing service to Edinburgh from other US airports, is due to the Scottish Government’s postponement of a reduction to air passenger taxes."
"All affected passengers have been informed and offered alternatives flights, or full refunds, if they wish to cancel their booking."
"Whilst this route cut means that Norwegian will currently not be offering any service to/from Bradley International Airport, the airline is continuously reviewing other future opportunities in Hartford as we have seen great potential in this market." TTG
