Dalle ceneri della fallita NIKI, il 25 marzo nasce Laudamotion, la nuova avventura di Niki Lauda.
In bocca al lupo.
Laudamotion to launch March 25
Laudamotion, the rebranded bankrupt airberlin subsidiary NIKI, plans to launch operations March 25, owner Niki Lauda confirmed to ATW.
Lauda—ex-Formula 1 champion and founder of Austria-based NIKI—retook ownership of the bankrupt carrier in January and rebranded it as Laudamotion. He said the company is working intensively for the launch.
“This is not easy, as we are starting from scratch, but we are now in final planning. Today, I can’t say how many aircraft will be available, because some of them are in maintenance and we don’t know exactly when we will get some aircraft from Lufthansa,” he said.
Following the bankruptcy of airberlin, Lufthansa secured aircraft from leasing companies, but agreed to transfer 15 of them to Laudamotion if Lufthansa was not able to buy NIKI.
NIKI filed for insolvency Dec. 13, 2017 and abruptly ceased operations, four months after airberlin filed for bankruptcy when Etihad Airways, which owned a 29.2% stake in the carrier, ended further financial support.
Lauda said he will announce network, service plans and fleet details next week.
“The flights we are operating for Condor are already able to book passengers,” he said.
On Feb. 16, German leisure carrier Condor said it will market selected Laudamotion flights from Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart (Germany) and Basel (Switzerland) to Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza and Malaga (Spain).
In addition, Condor will provide operational functions, including traffic control or crew planning. Condor said March 6 it will also begin to market Laudamotion flights from Zurich. In total, Condor and Laudamotion will offer 150,000 seats from Switzerland to nine destinations.
Laudamotion will base two aircraft in Switzerland for summer 2018 operations.
Condor is part of the leisure travel group Thomas Cook.

Laudamotion to partner with Eurowings, Condor
Niki Lauda, who bought former airberlin subsidiary NIKI in January and rebranded it into Laudamotion, plans to team up with Lufthansa LCC Eurowings and German leisure carrier Condor when enough aircraft become available.
“So far I cannot confirm wet-lease operations for Eurowings or others because I’m busy getting aircraft,” Lauda told ATW. “Nothing has been decided so far.”
Lauda aims to launch operations with 15 aircraft by the end of March. “I have 15 Airbus [A320 family aircraft] on the radar. On Monday, talks with Lufthansa’s fleet manager will continue,” he said.
Following the bankruptcy of airberlin, Lufthansa secured aircraft from leasing companies, but agreed to transfer 15 aircraft to Laudamotion if Lufthansa was not able to buy NIKI.
Eurowings spokesperson Matthias Eberle confirmed talks with Laudamotion for a possible wet-lease agreement. “Eurowings is growing very fast; we are looking for additional capacity and are talking with many airlines, including Laudamotion. But nothing has been decided so far,” he said.
Austrian Airlines’ spokesperson Peter Their told ATW the carrier also sees Laudamotion as a potential partner for possible wet leases. “We see a very strong demand and need additional capacity for the coming summer season,” he said.
On Feb. 16, German leisure carrier Condor said it will market selected Laudamotion flights from Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Stuttgart (Germany) and Basel (Switzerland) to Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza and Malaga (Spain). Additional destinations will follow.
Lauda was quoted in Condor’s statement as saying he has “great expectations for the cooperation with Condor.”
The cooperation includes 56 additional connections. In addition, Condor will market the Laudamotion flights, as well as operational functions, such as traffic control or crew planning.
Condor is part of the leisure travel group Thomas Cook, which also “plans to buy seat contingents on Laudamotion flights,” a spokesperson confirmed to ATW.
NIKI—which filed for insolvency Dec. 13, 2017 and abruptly ceased operations—was established in 2004 by Niki Lauda and in 2011 became a 100% airberlin subsidiary; in 2012 NIKI became a oneworld member.
