Air Berlin takes over Niki Lauda's airline
Nov 8, 2011, 10:41 GMT
Vienna - Niki Lauda will hand full ownership of his airline Niki to German carrier Air Berlin, which owned nearly half of the shares so far, the Austrian Formula One legend announced Tuesday in Vienna.
Air Berlin chief Hartmut Mehdorn said Niki would retain its brand and would keep Vienna as its hub.
Lauda's foundation holds slightly more than 50 per cent in Niki. It will hand over its stakes to settle its debts with Air Berlin in December, both companies said.
Lauda founded his first airline, Lauda Air, in 1979, which he sold to Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa in 1997. Six years later, he set up Niki.
