Lufthansa cabin crew union plans strike on 20 October
German flight-attendant union UFO has called for industrial action at Lufthansa on 20 October and indicated potential further strikes across the group's German-based carriers.
The planned strike will cover Lufthansa flights at the airline's hubs in Frankfurt and Munich for a 5h period from 6:00am local time, the union says.
UFO deputy chief Daniel Flohr said in a video message today that consultations will take place this week with the union's negotiation teams at group carriers about the possibility of "open-ended" strikes across group "at any time".
He says that the union will call for "action at every group airline" to achieve its objectives.
The dispute covers staff at Lufthansa, budget units Germanwings and Eurowings, regional arm CityLine, and the Frankfurt-based operation of Lufthansa's leisure joint venture with Turkish Airlines, SunExpress.
Further strike action will "solely depend on whether Lufthansa will return to the negotiation table", Flohr says.
The airline and union previously discussed employment terms, but the dispute escalated in 2018 over the installation of a new leadership team at UFO.
Flohr asserts that Lufthansa has prohibited talks with the union in relation to any group carrier and has threatened legal action against staff participating in the union's strike activities.
In August, Lufthansa filed a motion with a regional labour court in Frankfurt to "legally determine the union status of UFO".
The airline argues that both UFO's status as a union and the "authority" of its leadership to represent employees "remain unclear".
Lufthansa therefore deems the planned strike action illegal and says that talks with the union are "not possible".
The carrier is considering taking legal action against the planned strike.
Lufthansa says it has "no need" to amend its schedule and intends to operate a "full flight programme" on 20 October. Cirium/FG
Lufthansa HR chief to leave group amid union conflict
Lufthansa Group is making changes to its executive board positions, effective 1 January, in a bid to respond to "changes in our environment and within the company".
Chief corporate human resources and legal affairs officer Bettina Volkens will be replaced by Swiss's chief finance officer Michael Niggemann, the German group has disclosed.
It says Volkens is leaving the company "by mutual agreement" at the end of this month.
Lufthansa credits Volkens – who joined in 2012 and ascended to the executive board in the following year – with having "initiated an important and profound cultural change that has contributed significantly to the group's success".
After her "outstanding service" and "innovative" HR management, her responsibility will now pass to "a young team that will build on this foundation", says Lufthansa.
Her departure comes as flight-attendant union UFO threatens industrial action in the run-up to the festive season and next year following failed attempts to resolve a bitter, long-running labour dispute which spans terms and union representation at the German mainline and multiple subsidiaries.
Eurowings chief officer Thorsten Dirks has been appointed to oversee a newly created "IT, Digital & Innovation" department.
Before he joined Lufthansa in 2017 to manage the budget carrier, Dirks led the German operations of Spanish telecoms company Telefonica.
"Eurowings will no longer be managed as a separate board-level division… The airline will be run in the same way as the group's other passenger airlines, retaining its largely independent position," Lufthansa says.
Chief commercial officer Harry Hohmeister – who previously oversaw the group's network carriers Lufthansa, Swiss and Austrian Airlines – will become responsible for "all" the group's passenger airlines.
Brussels Airlines chief executive Christina Foerster has been assigned "customer & corporate responsibility".
She will oversee product management, the Miles & More loyalty programme and – crucially, as Lufthansa is set to divest its LSG catering division – onboard service.
Lufthansa says Foerster will additionally be responsible for "cultural development", and be the group's first-ever executive board member to represent "the company's responsibility for the environment, climate and society".
No decision has been made about Foerster's replacement at Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa says.
Foerster and Niggemann have both been given three-year contracts in their new roles.
Supervisory board chairman Karl-Ludwig Kley states that the new board structure takes into account "the strategic development of Lufthansa from an aviation group to an airline group".
He says: "We are strengthening our customer focus, we are increasing our efforts in digitalisation and we are anchoring responsibility for the environment and society at the executive board level."Cirium/FG
