Norwegian reports increased passenger traffic and higher revenues in September

Norwegian carried more than 3.3 million passengers in September. The unit revenue increased for the sixth consecutive month and was up by six percent compared to the same month previous year.

A total of 3,310,424 passengers chose to fly with Norwegian in September. The total traffic (RPK) increased by two percent, the capacity growth (ASK) was one percent and the load factor increased by 1.1 percentage point to 90 percent.

“As we are moving from growth to profitability, I am pleased that our unit revenue continued to increase for the sixth consecutive month and that passenger demand has been stable and solid. Norwegian’s operational performance continues to improve, and we are on track to reach the targeted cost-reductions of two billion NOK in 2019,” said Acting CEO and CFO of Norwegian, Geir Karlsen.

“The outlook going forward is promising, and for the upcoming winter season, we have adjusted our route portfolio and capacity to ensure that we are well positioned to meet the actual demand,” he added.

The continued fleet renewal contributed to a further reduction of CO2 emissions in September with 70 grams per passenger kilometre, a reduction of 0.3 percent compared to the same period last year. With an average age of 3.8 years, Norwegian has one of the world’s most environmentally friendly fleets. Thanks to this, the company has reduced its per passenger emissions by 30 percent since 2008.

Norwegian operated 99.3 percent of the scheduled flights in September, whereof 79.8 percent departed on time. The use of wetlease aircraft in September affected the on-time performance negatively.

Norwegian Air (NWC.OL) and New York’s JetBlue Airways (JBLU.O) plan a partnership enabling passengers flying between Europe and the United States to continue to multiple destinations under a single booking, potentially boosting traffic and average fares.

The airlines said in a joint statement on Thursday that if agreed the partnership would come into effect in the middle of next year.

Norwegian, Europe’s third-largest budget carrier, has shaken up the market for travel across the Atlantic with cut-price fares that challenge traditional carriers such as IAG’s (ICAG.L) British Airways, but its breakneck expansion left it with high debts and in the red.

The partnership with JetBlue will connect JetBlue flights from around 100 cities in the Americas to Norwegian’s network in New York, Boston and Fort Lauderdale, from which the carrier serves more than 20 European destinations.

The deal could help both airlines to boost traffic and the average fares they earn as transatlantic services are extended beyond the biggest U.S. cities, Bernstein analyst David Vernon said.

Norwegian already has a European partnership with London Gatwick-based easyJet (EZJ.L), but until now lacked a U.S. partner.

While Norwegian and other low-cost long-haul operators have challenged the big network carriers on their main intercontinental routes, the incumbents’ connecting traffic to smaller destinations has so far remained largely out of reach.

“If you compete on a purely point-to-point basis, you’re in the most commoditized, lowest-yielding segment of the market with no subset of passengers to destinations that rivals can’t get to,” Bernstein’s Vernon said.

“This is an opportunity for Norwegian to capture some extra, more profitable traffic,” he added.

Shares in Norwegian Air, which is cutting costs to try and return to profit, surged 10% on the news before giving up some gains to trade up 3.8% by 1248 GMT, outperforming an Oslo benchmark index .OSEBX up 0.6%.

“Customers will have the possibility to book connecting flights on both airlines’ websites by combining the best of our complementary and expansive networks,” the airlines said.

JetBlue Airways Corp has said that it hopes to break into the low-fare, transatlantic travel market.

“This new agreement ... seamlessly connects JetBlue’s robust network throughout the U.S., Caribbean and Latin America with ... exciting European destinations,” JetBlue Chief Executive Robin Hayes said in the statement.

Grazie. :)

Norwegian boosts third-quarter operating profit 64%

Norwegian has reported a 64% rise in third quarter operating profit, to NKr2.97 billion ($326 million), after slowing capacity growth in the period.
Revenue was up 8% at NKr14.4 billion, primarily thanks to the airline's intercontinental flights. Passenger numbers declined 3% to 10.5 million.
The airline increased capacity by just 3%, compared with 8% during the third quarter of 2018 and a 48% hike during last year's second quarter.
"Norwegian's key priority is returning to profitability through a series of measures, including an optimised route and base portfolio and an extensive cost-reduction programme," the airline says.
Its year-to-date operating profit stands at NKr2.13 billion, compared with a loss of NKr258 million across the same period last year
The cost-reduction programme, dubbed '#Focus2019', is running at "full force" and delivered savings worth NKr827 million during the third quarter, says Norwegian.
For the full year, it targets NKr2.3 billion in savings.
"We are delivering on our strategy of moving from growth to profitability," states acting chief executive and finance chief Geir Karlsen.
Despite "operational issues outside of our control", the airline has delivered "record-high" earnings and operating revenue while reducing unit cost, he notes.
Norwegian's fleet of 145 aircraft across its various divisions includes 18 Boeing 737 Max jets in storage, Cirium fleets data shows. Additionally, five of its 24 Rolls-Royce Trent 1000-powered 787 long-haul jets are in storage.
The carrier notes that the USA represents its largest market in revenue terms, followed by Norway, Spain and the UK.
In 2018, Norwegian generated a full-year operating loss of NKr3.85 billion. Cirium/FG

Esatto..

186. You cannot board more than 186 passengers..." al che il capitano è uscito dalla cabina di pilotaggio ed ha fatto cenno "ci penso io".

Saranno stati dipendenti fuori servizio.
