Emirates eyes adding flights to Mexico

Carrier ‘looking at different options’ to launch flights to Mexico

Dubai: Emirates airline said it is eyeing the Mexican market to expand its passenger network in Latin America, and is interested in adding services there.
Thierry Antinori, executive vice president and chief commercial officer of Emirates Airline, said on Wednesday the Dubai-based carrier is “looking at different options” with regards to flights to Mexico. His comments come just a few months after Emirates announced it plans to launch a service to Santiago in Chile via Sao Paulo.
“Mexico is an interesting market. We are flying there with the freighters. It’s the only country in the world with a population of a 100 million where Emirates is not flying, so it’s a market we should go [to], and we will go one day,” he told reporters, without providing details on when a lauch might be.
Antinori was speaking on Wednesday on the sidelines of a press conference to announce details on the Arabian Travel Market (ATM) taking place in Dubai next week. The chief commercial officer also welcomed the government’s move to launch policies to provide visas for transit passengers.
He said that Emirates will use the move to develop its stopover programme to passengers.
“Today, Emirates already has a stopover programme for some people stopping in Dubai … We will continue to look at developing this opportunity to show Dubai,” Antinori said.
“We are preparing further development of some of the product we have combining different things, so it’s a continuation and acceleration of what we have been doing in the past.”

Sudden Reversal For Aeromexico In Barcelona As Open Skies Dispute Moves South Of The Border

Aeromexico has issued a statement announcing that it will not launch new services from Mexico City to Barcelona in November of this year, operated by its new Dreamliner aircraft, as intended. The airline cites unfair Fifth Freedom Rights application by Emirates in Spain as the cause of the cancelation. Spain had approved Emirates Fifth Freedom flights to Mexico City from Barcelona this March.

This is a sudden reversal of the state of things at the beginning of the week when news spread that Emirates' authorization to fly from Dubai to Barcelona and on to Mexico City had been refused by Mexico's transport secretary. Reports in the Spanish and Mexican aviation press attributed the secretary's decision to Aeromexico's plans to re-launch service to Barcelona later this year. The Mexican carrier had previously shut down its Mexico City to Barcelona route in 2012. Emirates had no comment on the matter.
A recent understanding reached between the United Arab Emirates and the U.S., to resolve this long-running subsidies debate, was hailed by U.S. airline groups as a success on the part of President Donald Trump in protecting U.S. airlines and their employees.

However, the parties differed in their interpretation of what was achieved. When contacted, an Emirates spokesperson said,“there is no freeze on any of the operating rights prescribed in the Air Transport Agreement or any tacit undertakings to do so."

This was in sharp contrast with the conclusions reached by U.S. groups. A statement issued by the White House Press Secretary today seeks to clarify the terms.
The United States and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have reached an understanding related to the United States–UAE Open Skies agreement that will benefit pilots, flight attendants, machinists, and other working men and women in America’s airline industry. In the newly negotiated understanding, it was recognized that government subsidies undermine healthy and fair competition. The UAE has committed to financial transparency and will adhere to internationally-recognized accounting, disclosure, compliance, and auditing standards to make its practices more open and subject to public view and scrutiny. Lastly, the UAE informed the United States that its air carriers have no current plans to begin any new commercial “Fifth Freedom” flight routes, which are of particular concern to the U.S. carriers. The understanding mirrors the one made with Qatar earlier this year.
This understanding was the result of a White House task force co-led by the Office of Trade and Manufacturing Policy and the National Economic Council, and including representatives from the Department of State and the Department of Transportation and other key Federal agencies.
With this understanding, President Donald J. Trump has again shown his commitment to American jobs and American companies.

Not all U.S. carriers agree that Gulf carriers have an unfair competitive advantage. JetBlue, which operates flights to Mexico City and partners with Emirates on connections to the U.S., Caribbean and South America, has been critical of the U.S. Big 3 agenda Open Skies in the Gulf and beyond.
For its part, Aeromexico alleges that Emirates benefits from un-competitive subsidies, reopening the debating points supported by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, as well as lobbying groups representing their interests and their interests of employee unions, throughout this dispute. Delta Air Lines holds a 49% equity stake in Aeromexico.

Emirates drops planned Mexico service

Emirates has dropped its plans to begin service to Mexico via Barcelona, after Mexican authorities informed the Dubai-based airline that it could not operate daily service.
"Despite previous assurances that slots [at Mexico City airport] were not an issue at the flight timings requested, the Mexican authorities have informed us that we will not be able to operate daily services, but only three flights a week," says Emirates.
"Unfortunately, this is not commercially viable for us given the resource investment required for such a long distance operation, not to mention the negative impact on connectivity and convenience for our customers."
Emirates had planned to serve Mexico City from Dubai via a stop in Barcelona. The Gulf carrier's proposed service was opposed by Aeromexico, which decided in May to not begin planned service to Barcelona In November as a result of the planned Emirates flight.
The Mexican airline, echoing its US partner and shareholder Delta Air Lines, had called Emirates an airline that "enjoys subsidies and benefits from its government".
Aeromexico had said that Emirates' fifth freedom authorisation on the routing would allow them to "offer flights between Mexico and Spain as if it were a Mexican airline".
Aeromexico did not immediately respond to requests for comment. It is not immediately clear if the Mexican airline will reinstate its plans for Barcelona service.
Emirates says it hopes to serve Mexico in the future when "the conditions enable us to do so".
"This is hugely disappointing, as our teams have been working hard with various stakeholders to bring this service to fruition in the three years since the Mexican president invited Emirates to operate this route and open new air links to connect Mexico to the Middle East, as well as key economic markets in Africa and Asia," it adds.FG

Aeromexico eyes Barcelona after Emirates cancels Mexico plans

  • 24 SEPTEMBER, 2018
Aeromexico intends to launch flights to Barcelona now that Emirates Airline has cancelled its plan to operate to Mexico via Barcelona, says Aeromexico chief executive Andres Conesa.

Conesa does not say when Aeromexico will begin Barcelona flights. He also distances himself and his airline from Emirates' decision.
"It was their decision," Conesa tells FlightGlobal on 24 September during the Airline Passenger Experience Association's annual expo in Boston.
"We plan to continue enhancing coverage" of Europe, Conesa adds, noting that Barcelona is among cities Aeromexico intends to serve.
Aeromexico had initially intended to begin flying between Mexico City and Barcelona on 1 November.
But the airline cancelled that plan in May, citing an intention by Emirates – which Aeromexico described as heavily subsidised – to serve the same route.
Emirates had proposed to serve Mexico City as part of a Dubai-Barcelona-Mexico City route. The Gulf carrier already operates to Barcelona nonstop twice daily from Dubai, FlightGlobal schedules data show.
Dubai-based Emirates has now dropped that plan, blaming Mexican authorities for failing to make good on assurances that Emirates could secure daily slots at Mexico City.
Emirates said it was able to obtain slots for only three-times-weekly flights.
The controversy mirrors a similar dispute that has played out over several years between Gulf carriers and major US airlines.
