Air Mauritius will again become a fully state-owned airline.
The Mauritian government’s Airport Holdings Ltd., the majority shareholder of the flag carrier will acquire the remaining voting shares of the airline.
On April 22, 2020, the board of directors previously made the decision to place the airline under voluntary administration after COVID-19-related disruptions made it impossible for the airline to meet its financial obligations. The pandemic has had a major impact on the revenue of flag carrier while it was seeking to change its business model to address existing financial problems

Garuda on the Brink of Bankruptcy

Jakarta. National carrier Garuda Indonesia could face bankruptcy amid ballooning debts and financial hardships due to the devastating impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to media reports on Sunday, the government has prepared all possible contingencies for Garuda, including liquidation and a replacement by state-owned air charter company Pelita Air Service if ongoing rescue measures are fruitless.
“If we meet a dead-end, we will close [Garuda] down because injecting more state money is impossible given the company’s massive debt loads,” Kartiko Wirjoatmodjo, a deputy for the state-own enterprises minister, told Antara news agency.
He said Garuda is currently negotiating with lenders and tens of aircraft lessors in its attempts to restructure debts.
Even if Garuda can stabilize its financial conditions, it’s almost certain that the company will no longer be able to serve long-haul flights in the future, Kartiko added.
According to Garuda’s financial results in June, the company has a debt of $4.9 billion and the load increased by Rp 1 trillion ($70 million) every month because of delay in loan payment, Kompas news website reported.
Before the pandemic, Garuda booked around Rp 100 billion in profit in 2019, but by the third quarter of 2020, it suffered a massive loss of Rp 15 trillion.
The website also reported that the government has prepared Pelita Air Service, a subsidiary of state-owned oil company Pertamina, to serve domestic flights if Garuda files for bankruptcy.
State-Owned Enterprises Minister Erick Thohir said earlier Garuda leased its fleet from at least 36 aircraft lessors, some of them had been involved in “corrupt practices” with the previous Garuda management.
Garuda has faced a number of civil lawsuits from lessors for inability to pay the rent.
Garuda corporate secretary Mitra Piranti said in a letter to the Indonesia Stock Exchange the company “continues taking strategic steps to accelerate business recovery with the main focus on improving the company’s fundamental performance”.
The return of tourism business increases optimism for the company’s future, Mitra added.
“In addition, we continue to negotiate and communicate with all creditors to reach the best settlement and debt restructuring that will improve the company’s fundamental performance,” he said.

JAKARTA, Oct 24 (Jakarta Post/ANN): The government is preparing a plan for state-owned charter airline PT Pelita Air Service to take over Garuda Indonesia’s domestic routes as courts pass decisions, both favourable and unfavourable, over the financially-ailing national air carrier.
The plan entails turning Pelita Air into a full-service airline in helping meet domestic flight demand once the government lifts travel restrictions, according to State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Deputy Minister Kartiko Wirjoatmodjo as reported by bisnis.com.
The government devised the plan in the event Garuda fails to renegotiate leases and restructure its Rp 70 trillion (US$4.94 billion) debt.
“It looks like the government wants to maintain a direct involvement in an airline,” aviation consultant Gerry Soedjatman told The Jakarta Post.“Even if Garuda survives, it appears that Pelita will be the main airline in the government’s ownership.”
Gerry said Pelita Air had five years' experience in operating scheduled flights between 2002 and 2007, but the company chose to focus on its core business of charter flights.
He added that because the Covid-19 pandemic had forced many airlines across the world to sell their aircraft, it would be relatively easy for Pelita Air to expand its fleet.
Pelita has 23 aircraft as of 2019, according to its latest annual report. However, the carrier will also face competition for those aircraft, including from the newly launched low-cost Indonesian carrier Super Air Jet, which already plans to buy between 20 and 30 planes, Gerry said.
The contingency plan surfaced at a time when Garuda’s board is weighing options on how to deal with the insolvent national flag carrier, whose net loss swelled 25 percent annually to $902 million in the first half this year after extended mobility restrictions curbed air travel demand.
Garuda’s insolvency also led to several lawsuits, including from foreign aircraft lessors AerCap Ireland Ltd, Helice Leasing SAS and Atterissage SAS, as well as Indonesian cargo company PT My Indo Airlines.
AerCap Ireland withdrew its lawsuit in July after signing a deal with Garuda to relocate and fly nine leased Boeing 737 800NG aircraft in certain approved locations.
Meanwhile, Helice Leasing SAS and Atterissage SAS won their court battle in September, which meant Garuda had to pay all aircraft renting and leasing fees, back payments, plus interest and court fees to the two lessors.
On Thursday, the Central Jakarta Court rejected a debt postponement petition (PKPU) against My Indo Airlines, although the debt remained. Garuda and My Indo Airlines launched a cargo freighter service in 2019.
“Going forward, Garuda will stay focused on efforts to restructure its obligations and operations, as well as guarantee that flight operations for passengers and cargo run normally,” the flag carrier reported in a statement.
Novie Riyanto, the director general of air transportation at the Transportation Ministry, told the Post in a text message on Thursday that the government had issued the permit for Pelita Air to operate full-service flights.
The government recently reopened Bali’s Ngurah Rai International Airport to international flights, signaling the start of plans to recover air travel in Indonesia.
Garuda itself was reportedly mulling over a plan to massively reduce its fleet, especially widebody planes, by removing nearly 80 aircraft and canceling orders of over 90. The flag carrier would instead focus on developing its low-cost carrier subsidiary, Citilink.
Garuda is also slated to receive a Rp 3.5 trillion capital injection (PMN) in 2022 through the newly formed state-owned travel holding PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (Aviata).
Pelita Air, a subsidiary of state-owned oil giant Pertamina, booked a 20.16 percent increase in revenue to US$58.47 million in 2019.
While an overwhelming majority of its revenue came from air charter, the maintenance business accounted for 14 percent of Pelita Air’s revenue that year.
The charter airline also booked an US$863,000 net profit in 2019, reversing the net loss it booked in 2018.
For 2020, Pelita Air projected revenue to grow by 17.99 percent to $68.99 million; 72 percent from air charter, 14 percent from maintenance and the rest from other businesses.
Pelita Air and the SOE Ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Thai Airways to sell 42 jets, cut workforce to reduce costs
BANGKOK, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Thai Airways International Pcl (THAI.BK) will sell 42 planes and cut nearly a third of its workforce as part of a plan to slim down the fleet and cut costs, the head of its restructuring committee said on Monday.
The airline, which was in difficulty well before the pandemic struck, is going through a bankruptcy-protected restructuring.

Piyasvasti Amranand, who is leading the effort, said that the planes being sold are old and not energy efficient. He said 16 jets on lease will be returned.
After the sale, the airline will have 58 planes across four types.

Thai Airways has been losing money nearly every year since 2012.
Piyasvasti said the airline planned to add more flights especially from Europe over the next few months as travel recovers.

Piyasvasti said that Thai Airways will reduce the number of workers from 21,300 to 14,500 by December 2022.

To help with cash flow, the airline will conclude a 25 billion baht ($749.18 million) credit agreement with financial institutions by next year and is in talks with the government for an additional 25 billion baht, he said.
The airline booked a profit of 11.1 billion baht ($332.63 million) in the six months ending in June from a loss of 28 billion baht during the corresponding period a year earlier after reducing expenses.

Invece Avianca dovrebbe uscire dal Chapter 11 a fine anno.

Avianca plans to emerge from Chapter 11 reorganization before the end of the year
Avianca has announced that following its submission of additional documentation that had been requested by the United States Court for the Southern District Court of New York– the Court has confirmed Avianca’s Plan of Reorganization*i. The Company expects to successfully complete its court-supervised reorganization and emerge from Chapter 11 before the end of the year as a more efficient and financially stronger airline, well positioned for long-term success.
Upon emergence, the Company will have a solid balance sheet, with significantly reduced debt and over $1 billion in liquidity. Avianca’s restructuring will enable the Company to continue repositioning and simplifying its business, re-establishing as the carrier of choice in Latin America by adopting more competitive pricing for clients, reconfiguring aircraft with best-in-class modern seating, expanding network routes both domestically and internationally, refinancing its aircraft portfolio and obtaining long-term financing commitments. Avianca will keep the airline’s differentiating and competitive assets, which include a robust network, one of the best loyalty programs, VIP Lounges, signature services and one of the most competitive cargo solutions in the region.
Business Plan:
Avianca’s updated business plan impacts all facets of operations – the destinations Avianca will serve, the aircraft Avianca will operate, and the way Avianca will serve customers – to build on its leadership position and drive its future success.
Notably, the business plan projects:

  • A financially viable and stable airline;
  • Higher network density with a passenger fleet of more than 130 aircraft flying over 200 largely point-to-point routes by year-end 2025, with expanded service across Latin America as demand fully recovers;
  • A leaner cost structure providing both better pricing and more direct service, while enabling growth into new markets; and
  • Continued growth of the air cargo and LifeMiles loyalty businesses, building on the Company’s already well-established market positions.
Avianca’s Business Vision Milestones:
Over the course of 2021, Avianca has made significant progress on its new business vision in three key areas: strengthening its network, redesigning products and enhancing services. Certain milestones that the Company has already successfully achieved include:

  • A stronger network: Announced 23 new point-to-point routes in strategic markets for 2022, including Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala and Costa Rica. Avianca plans to operate more than 100 new routes in the next three years.
  • Cabin reconfiguration: Incorporated more seats to offer more competitive prices and increase the number of passengers carried. The capacity of each aircraft will be increased by up to 20%.
  • Tailor-made service bundles: Provided customers with better flexibility to manage their flights and services so they only pay for what they really need.
  • Better self-service: Strengthened online customer service, its chat service “Vianca” and digital channels so that passengers can manage their trip more easily from the mobile application and Avianca’s website.
  • A rewarding LifeMiles program: Introduced a new mileage accrual model and more benefits for loyalty program travelers.
