Ah, saperlo (cit.)!

Incident: Italia A332 at New York and Rome on Jun 17th 2022/Jun 18th 2022, departed despite ground collision

By Simon Hradecky, created Monday, Jun 20th 2022 17:53Z, last updated Monday, Jun 20th 2022 17:53Z

An Italia Trasporto Aereo Airbus A330-200, registration EI-EJL performing flight AZ-611 from New York JFK,NY (USA) to Rome Fiumicino (Italy), was climbing out of New York's runway 31L when tower queried the crew, whether they had any damage, the crew of an Air France aircraft had reported the AZ-611 had hit them or similiar. The crew continued the flight to Rome for a landing without further incident about 8 hours later.

The aircraft subsequently remained on the ground in Rome for 46 hours.

A listener on frequency reported Air France flight AF-8 (B772 F-GSPO arriving from Paris CDG (France) into JFK) repeatedly called ground telling ground AF-611 had hit them during taxi and asked to not let AZ-611 depart resulting in a lengthy discussion on frequency. Only then tower queried AZ-611 already after departure.

AF008: Ground, from Air France zero zero eight, please answer!

JFK: Hello, good evening, how can I help you? This is your first time calling me.

AF008: Yes, this is Air France zero zero eight, we are on stand nine, and there is an Alitalia passing behind us that hit our aircraft. It's [...] not to take off.

JFK: Can you say this again, please? Are you saying that the Alitalia aircraft hit you? Where are you?

AF008: [...] Alitalia not to take off... better to cancel the takeoff.

JFK: OK, where are you?

AF008: Did you copy for the Alitalia? I don't know which Alitalia.

JFK: OK, where are you Alitalia?

AF008: This is Air France zero zero eight. We got hit by an Alitalia passing behind on stand nine. I'm not aware if the pilots have damaged their aircraft.

JFK: Are you sure it was Alitalia?

AF008: Yes, the [...] told me it was Alitalia.

JFK: Air France, where are you?

AF008: We are at gate number nine - gate number nine.

JFK: Please stop calling me, I'm gonna talk to Air France now.

JFK: Air France zero zero eight, I would like you to call the tower, please.

JFK: You're on Ground, please check you frequency.

AF008: Yes, Air France zero zero eight has the Ground, and for you to stop the takeoff from Alitalia because [...].

JFK: Air France zero zero eight, please call... are you ready to copy the phone number?

JFK: Itarrow six eleven heavy?

ITY611: Go ahead.

JFK: Yes, Sir, just to let you know... another aircraft on the ground currently -- Air France -- said that you hit them or something of that nature while you were taxiing, did you experience any damage to the aircraft?

ITY611: Negative, Sir.

JFK: OK, Sir. Itarrow 611 heavy just thought I'd ask you, just to make sure. Contact New York Departure, please.

ITY611: New York Departure, Itarrow 611, ciao!

Rapallo, Liguria.
