Why Flight Shame Is Like Dieting
Joanna Bailey

Listening to his interview at the IATA Wings of Change event in Berlin last year, Carsten Spohr, CEO of Lufthansa, raised a very interesting point. He drew attention to the parallels between flight shame and dieting, a point I’d like to investigate further here.

When speaking about the flight shame movement at the IATA event, Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr drew a parallel between people’s wish to reduce their impact on the environment and dieting. He said,

“If someone wants to lose weight, you don’t tell them just to stop eating.”

He went on to explain how the food industry has responded to the trend of more health conscious eating by improving labelling of products to help us choose wisely. Both in Europe and in the US, food for sale in shops will carry a standardized label that advises on the calorific content of the product, as well as how much saturated fat, sugar and carbs are loaded in.

Mr. Spohr’s point was that, for those who want to reduce their environmental impact, simply saying ‘stop flying’ is often not an option, just as ‘stop eating’ wouldn’t be a sensible message for dieters. However, if passengers were more aware of the environmental impact of a specific flight, they would be better equipped to make an informed choice about the flight they took.

It’s a great point and one that bears thinking about.

Could eco-labeling of flights take off?

Back in 2007, UK regional airline Flybe became the first airline to eco-label its flights. Now, if you live in Europe and have bought or rented a property, or even an electrical appliance, in the last few years, you’ll recognize the format of this label.

Flybe aimed to replicate the labels we see on electrical goods and to houses on their Energy Performance Certificates in order to allow easy comparison of flights. Their label gave CO2 emissions for different trip lengths, for the aircraft overall and for the amount of noise generated by the plane.

Sadly, the initiative didn’t last very long for Flybe. For a few years it displayed the eco-labels prominently on the side of its aircraft as well as in the seatback pocket, but on my own recent Flybe trips, I’ve not seen anything like this displayed. There’s no longer any reference to the eco-label on its website either.

Perhaps other airlines toyed with the idea of an eco-label or energy performance label for their aircraft, or perhaps Flybe was the only one. Either way, the idea has never hit the mainstream but, in my opinion, it remains an interesting option for airlines looking to combat flight shame.

Think about it; if you want to get from A to B, often there are several airlines offering a service for within a few pounds of each other. Ignoring the frequent flier benefits, we usually choose a service based on convenient times or simply on price alone. If those flights also included an eco-label, it would give us the opportunity to pick an airline that is investing in reducing its CO2 emissions.

Why they won’t

The long and short of it is no airline wants a reason for a flier to choose a competitor, so apart from those airlines with very young fleets, none is going to want to advertise their environmental impact. A Wizz Air flight on a shiny new A321neo is always going to beat a British Airways flight on an aging A320-200, but they don’t want you to know that.

Still, I believe that more information about the impact of flights is key to tackling flight shame. Just like the dieter choosing between the cream cake and the apple, we need to know which one is the apple in order to make a good choice.

What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

German airline Lufthansa is planning to slash half of its flights and is considering grounding its entire fleet of A380 superjumbos, as the fallout from the coronavirus continues to hit the global air travel industry.
The company, which includes Swiss International Air Lines and Austrian Airlines, said it was considering temporarily grounding its entire fleet of 14 Airbus A380 superjumbos in Frankfurt and Munich.
It will cut up to half its flights from April in response to a drastic decline in air travel bookings as the number of coronavirus cases around the world grows daily.
“In recent days, the Lufthansa Group has been exposed to drastic declines in bookings and numerous flight cancellations due to the spread of the Covid-19 virus. All traffic areas are now affected,” it said in a statement.
Airlines slash international fares in bid to beat coronavirus downturn
The latest drastic cutback comes just two days after the company said it would ground about 20% of its fleet.
Earlier on Friday shares in rival airline Norwegian fell by more than a quarter amid investor fears over the airline’s resilience amid the coronavirus outbreak.

The selloff came as analysts warned that the airline’s cash reserves were slim. On Thursday, shares had already tumbled as the budget carrier withdrew its profits forecasts from last month and cancelled 22 transatlantic flights in the spring due to reduced passenger demand.
The company said it had already reduced capacity by 15% this year, and had relatively low exposure to Italy and the business travel market, both of which have been hard hit by the coronavirus outbreak. However, its share price has now dropped by more than 70% in less than a month.
Norwegian is the third-largest low-cost carrier in Europe behind easyJet and Ryanair,
and a pioneer of low-cost, long-haul flights.
While several analysts have viewed Norwegian as undervalued after it appeared to have got on to a firmer financial footing, on Friday morning the Oslo-based Pareto Securities cut its rating on the stock from buy to hold. Analyst Kenneth Sivertsen said: “The situation it is likely to wipe out [Norwegian’s] stellar start of the year and a prolonged crisis might require equity refill as the cash buffer is slim.”
Airlines worldwide have been hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak, with many implementing emergency cost-cutting measures and cutting back their flight schedules. The owners of Flybe said the coronavirus was the final blow that pushed Europe’s largest regional airline into administration this week.

According to the International Air Transport Association (Iata), the impact of the coronavirus could cost passenger airlines up to $113bn (£87bn) in lost revenues this year.
While Norwegian’s share price has dropped more than most, an average of 25% has been wiped off airline’s market value since the start of the outbreak in China

Roma, 7 apr.

Lufthansa Group decides on first restructuring package

-Significant decline in air travel also expected for period after the Coronavirus crisis
-Suspension of aircraft leads to the first permanent capacity reduction
-The inevitable downsizing of flight operations shall be implemented in a socially responsible manner, among other things, through collective employment models

The Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG does not expect the aviation industry to return to pre-coronavirus crisis levels very quickly. According to its assessment, it will take months until the global travel restrictions are completely lifted and years until the worldwide demand for air travel returns to pre-crisis levels. Based on this evaluation, today the Executive Board has decided on extensive measures to reduce the capacity of flight operations and administration long term.

The decisions taken today will affect almost all flight operations of the Lufthansa Group.

At Lufthansa, six Airbus A380s and seven A340-600s as well as five Boeing 747-400s will be permanently decommissioned. In addition, eleven Airbus A320s will be withdrawn from short-haul operations.

The six A380s were already scheduled for sale to Airbus in 2022. The decision to phase out seven A340-600s and five Boeing 747-400s was taken based on the environmental as well as economic disadvantages of these aircraft types. With this decision, Lufthansa will be reducing capacity at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich.

Furthermore, Lufthansa Cityline will also withdraw three Airbus A340-300 aircraft from service. Since 2015, the regional carrier has been operating flights to long-haul tourist destinations for Lufthansa.

Eurowings will also be reducing the number of its aircraft. In the short-haul segment, an additional ten Airbus A320s are planned to be phased out.

Eurowings long-haul business which is run under the commercial responsibility of Lufthansa, will also be reduced.

In addition, the implementation of Eurowings objective of bundling flight operations into only one unit, which was defined before the crisis, will now be accelerated. Germanwings flight operations will be discontinued. All options resulting from this are to be discussed with the respective unions.

The restructuring programs already initiated at Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines will be further intensified due to the coronavirus crisis. Among other things, both companies are working on reducing their fleets. SWISS International Air Lines will also adjust its fleet size by delaying deliveries of new short haul aircraft and consider early phase-outs of older aircraft.

In addition, the Lufthansa Group airlines have already terminated almost all wet lease agreements with other airlines.

The aim remains the same for all employees affected by the restructuring measures: to offer as many people as possible continued employment within the Lufthansa Group. Therefore, talks with unions and workers councils are to be arranged quickly to discuss, among other things, new employment models in order to keep as many jobs as possible.
