Earlier this year the Company Council submitted a comprehensive pay claim covering all aspects of T&Cs. As no progress has been made, the Company Council conducted an indicative ballot for industrial action in which 91% of members voted 'Yes'. As no further progress was made at a stage two failure to agree meeting in June, the Company Council has escalated the negotiations to the final stage of the FTA process.

EU orders Ryanair to return €8.5 million to France

The European Commission ordered the Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair to return to France €8.5 million of illegal aid paid under contracts for Montpellier airport.

A year-long investigation found out that the Association for the Promotion of Touristic and Economic Flows (APFTE) had given €8.5 million to the airline between 2010 and 2017 in order in exchange for promoting Montpellier and the surrounding area as a touristic destination on the airline's website.

But the Commission has found that this marketing service was, in fact, an incentive to maintain Ryanair’s operations at Montpellier airport (MPL). Furthermore, as APFTE is an independent association, not related to the airport operator and financed almost entirely by regional and local public entities, it concluded that these contracts were financed with state resources.

“The European Commission has come to the conclusion that the marketing services contracts concluded between the
Association for the Promotion of Tourism and Economic Flows (APFTE) and Ryanair at Montpellier Airport are illegal under the EU rules on State aid,” said the authority. Ryanair must now reimburse the illegal State aid of €8.5 million to France.

Similar discrepancies were already noted in other airports in France, Germany, and Italy. The Commission said it was currently examining further agreements among airlines and the German airport of Frankfurt-Hahn, as well as the Spanish airports of Reus and Gerona.

Ryanair pilots set strike dates

Molly Dyson
Ryanair pilots based in the UK have voted in favour of strike action in a row over pay and conditions, with two walk-outs announced for August and September.

According to the British Airline Pilots Association (BALPA), the strike ballot had a 72 per cent turnout, with 80 per cent agreeing to take industrial action.

Pilots are now planning to strike from 0001 on 22 August until 2359 on 23 August, and from 0001 on 2 September until 2359 on 4 September.

BALPA said Ryanair’s refusal to work with unions until 2018 led to “a management that apparently doesn’t understand how to work with unions, and secondly a company that doesn’t have a number of standard agreements that any union would reasonably expect in any workplace”.

Pilots have listed a number of issues relating to the dispute, including pensions, loss of license insurance, maternity benefits, allowances and a “fair, transparent and consistent pay structure”.

BALPA general secretary Brian Strutton commented: “We have had no formal offer from Ryanair and it is imperative that we resolve this dispute urgently to avoid strike action. No pilot wants to spoil the public’s travel plans, but at the moment it seems we have no choice.”

The news comes after Ryanair announced it would have to cut up to 900 jobs by summer 2020 following a drop in profits and a delay in deliveries of the troubled Boeing 737 Max aircraft.

Responding to the strike threat, Ryanair claimed BALPA had the support of less than 30 per cent of its UK pilots, as it believes less than half are actually members of the union. The carrier also claimed its UK senior captains earn up to £180,000 a year.

In a statement, the airline said: “BALPA have no mandate to disrupt our customers’ holidays and flights, particularly at a time when UK pilots are facing job losses due to the Boeing Max delivery delays and the threat of a no-deal Brexit on 31 October.”

Ryanair said it has asked BALPA back to the negotiating table “to minimise job losses instead of taking ill-judged and ill-timed industrial action”.

The Ryanair strikes come as BALPA continues negotiations with British Airways to avoid a pilot walk-out.

Spanish pilot union calls five-day Ryanair strike

Ryanair is facing intensified industrial action in Spain as the SEPLA pilot union has announced strike dates for 19, 20, 22, 27 and 29 September.
Around 900 pilots will be invited to walk out in protest at the closures of Ryanair bases in Lanzarote, Tenerefe, Las Palmas and Girona, eliminating a total of 120 jobs.
The action would take place alongside strikes by Spanish unions USO and SITCPLA, which represent cabin crew. They have called for action across the country on 1, 2, 6, 8, 13, 15, 20, 22, 27 and 29 September.
SEPLA accuses Ryanair of seeking to establish a series of "low cost of a low cost" companies to drive down wages and standards. It cites the establishment of a base in Palma de Mallorca by Ryanair subsidiary Lauda and the creation of Buzz Air, a Polish subsidiary that is offering pilot jobs in the Canary Islands.
The union says Ryanair is continuing to hire pilots, and argues that this "would make these layoffs inadmissible". SEPLA also questions whether Ryanair has followed the correct procedures in dismissing employees.
SEPLA president Oscar Sanguino states that the union will continue to engage with Ryanair in an effort to avoid the strikes: "We will exhaust all the ways to avoid this, but we remember that we are only defending our jobs."
Ryanair is facing the threat of industrial action in several European countries by pilots and cabin crew who accuse the airline of providing poor employment conditions.
Responding to the strikes called by SEPLA, SITCPLA and USO, the budget carrier states: "As the closure of Ryanair's loss-making winter bases in the Canaries cannot, and will not, be reversed, these strikes are unnecessary and doomed to fail."
The base closures are "irreversible until such time as the Boeing Max delivery delays are resolved", adds the airline.
It notes that it will have 30 fewer Boeing 737s than planned this winter as a result of those delivery delays. "This aircraft shortage has forced [us] to close some loss making winter bases, and cut aircraft numbers at others," it says. "These difficult decisions have affected many Ryanair bases this winter, not just in Spain but across eight other countries."
Ryanair also argues that as "almost all" the traffic at the Canary Islands bases originates overseas it "can be better served by aircraft based in other EU countries" without such "high costs and inefficiency".
The airline – which expects to cancel six Spanish flights on 1 September and eight the following day – warns that the calling of strikes "just eight weeks before Brexit" amounts to "an act of great self-harm" by the unions. Cirium
