Qatar Airways will be the first airline to fly the Airbus A350-1000, giving the fast-growing Gulf airline a prestigious double crown as launch customer for both the initial A350-900 and its larger longer-range sibling.

"The A350-1000 is next on its way, and yet again Qatar Airways will be first airline to receive the A350-1000, which should be entering service in 2017" said Mike Bausor, A350 WXB Marketing Director, speaking at today's official launch of the Qatar A350 in Doha.

Cathay Pacific, Etihad and United Airlines have also signed on the dotted line for the A350-1000, which will carry an estimated 350 passengers in a three-class layout compared to around 310 passengers in the A350-900.

This of course depends on how each airline configures their A350 cabins: Qatar's spacious 36 business class seats (above) and 247 18- inch wide economy seats brings the tally to 283 passengers.

Qatar's A350-1000 will feature Qatar's next generation business class, which Qatar CEO Akbar Al Baker described to Australian Business Traveller as a 'business class bedroom' offering a double bed at a business class fare."

The Airbus A380 will be the only jet in Qatar's fleet boasting first class.

“Our premium travel is business travel, mostly, so we will keep a very limited number of first class seats, only in the A380, and all the other airplanes will only have a business class product" Al Baker said.

“We have decided that we better not have first class, but give a very good business class product, and that is what we are doing – we are really giving a first class product with a business class price.”

Iberia’s First Look at the Airbus A350 XWB

  • An aircraft of the same model as the eight units to join the Iberia fleet landed in Spain for the first time.
  • Iberia’s airport handling unit had its first hands-on experience with the new Airbus A350 XWB, for which it has all the special equipment needed.
  • Between late 2015 and 2020 Iberia will complete the total replacement of its long-haul fleet, receiving eight new Airbus A330/200s and eight Airbus A350s.
  • Airbus studies indicate that the company’s A350 XWB will consume up to 25% less fuel and have lower maintenance costs than other aircraft in its category. Its similarities to the A330 mean 65% smaller expenditures on pilot training, and greater operational flexibility.

Between late 2015 and 2020 Iberia will complete the total replacement of its long-haul fleet, receiving eight new Airbus A330/200s and eight Airbus A350s

The flight was met by Iberia Airport Service handling crews, already equipped with the stairs, push-back tractors, platforms, APUs and other items required to perform aircraft, passenger, baggage, and cargo handling services on the Airbus A350 XWBs, rehearsing for the day when the new model joins the fleets of Iberia and other airlines using Spanish airports.

Iberia has welcomed today an A350XWB aircraft in its maintenance hangars near Madrid airport’s, which will be joining Iberia to renew its long-haul fleet soon. The aircraft, on a test flight from the Airbus factory in Toulouse, is the first of its kind to land in Madrid.

Fleet renewal

In August, 2014, IAG announced that it was ordering 16 new long-haul aircraft for Iberia, eight Airbus A330/200s and eight Airbus A350 XWBs, to be delivered between late 2015 and 2020.

In the last two years, Iberia has received eight A330-300 and retrofitted the cabins of its A340-600 aircraft to install its new long-haul cabins, among the best in the market.

11% Made in Spain

To replace its long-haul fleet Iberia chose an aircraft of which more than 10% is made by Spanish industry, which is amongst the world's leaders in the use of carbon fibre in aircraft manufacture. Airbus in Spain is responsible for making the horizontal stabiliser, the tail cone (section 19), and the wing cover. Amongst others, it works with its Tier 1 principals such as Alestis, which makes the aircraft's belly fayring as well as the last section of the rear fuselage (section 19.1), and Socata, which is responsible for making the main landing gear doors.

More Efficient, More Comfortable

The two engines powering the A350 XWB are more efficient than their predecessors, and according to the manufacturer, they consume up to 25 less fuel, and thus emit 25% less CO2. Their maintenance costs are also lower than those of similar aircraft.

For Iberia, this aircraft has the additional advantage of its operational similarities to the A330, which reduces pilot training time and expense by 65%, and contributes to greater operational flexibility.

Airbus A350 XWBs can fly up to 15,580 km without refuelling and are certified to fly on longer routes than other twin-engine aircraft, such as Iberia’s fleet of A330s. The A350 XWB can make detours of up to 2,500 nautical miles or for 370 minutes, which makes them suitable to cover any of Iberia’s current long-haul routes.

A350 XWB - Basic Technical Data

  • Length: 66.8 m
  • Wingspan: 64.75 m
  • Fuselage width: 5.96 m
  • Height: 17.5 m
  • Autonomy: 8,500 nautical miles / 15,580 km
  • Fuel capacity: 130,000 litres
  • Engine thrust: (lbx 1000) Trent XWB-84 84 (374 kN)

More Comfort Aboard

The key structural elements of the Airbus A350 XWB are made from advanced materials –carbon fibre, titanium, and aluminium alloys– that are not affected by either corrosion or metal fatigue. On board, passengers will enjoy travelling in a particularly quiet and extremely comfortable cabin, wider than others in its category, and with more headroom, larger windows, and more spacious hand luggage compartments.
