Emirates defers delivery of a dozen A380s
Middle Eastern carrier Emirates is to defer delivery of 12 Airbus A380s which had been due to arrive over the next two years, under a tripartite agreement to cut production of the type a year earlier than previously planned.

Emirates is to defer delivery of six A380s by a year, from 2017 to 2018, and push back another six from 2018 to 2019.
Airbus says the postponement follows an agreement between Emirates and Rolls-Royce, which manufactures the Trent 900 engine for the type, and a subsequent agreement between the airline and the airframer.
The manufacturer disclosed earlier this year that it would halve production of the A380 from 2018, to just 12 aircraft a year, following a review which took into account demand for the type.
Airbus says it will “adapt the A380 delivery stream” for Emirates but stresses that it will still deliver “around 12” of the aircraft per year from 2018.
It adds that further initiatives to reduce fixed costs “will be accelerated” in order to minimise the impact on A380 break-even in 2017.
Airbus had achieved production break-even on the type in 2015 but the planned rate cut has threatened to push the programme back into losses. The airframer had been looking to put in place efficiency measures to reduce the break-even threshold to 20 aircraft next year.
Emirates still had 55 A380s due for delivery at the end of November this year. The airline says it is preparing to take its first Trent 900-powered A380, and that the delivery is "scheduled for this week".

Emirates on verge of taking first Trent A380s

Emirates is set to take delivery of at least three Rolls-Royce Trent-powered Airbus A380s before the end of this year.

The Dubai-based carrier has agreed to fit Trent 900 engines on up to 50 of the type, having previously opted for the Engine Alliance GP7200.
But introduction of its first Trent-powered A380 has been delayed over technical matters, and a revised handover date of 16 December passed with the aircraft remaining undelivered.
A spokesperson for Emirates says, however, that the airline has “come to an agreement” with Rolls-Royce regarding the technical issue relating to the Trent engines.
“We will receive delivery of our first Rolls-Royce-powered A380s this week and, before the end of this year, we will receive delivery of two more,” the spokesperson adds.
But Emirates is not elaborating on the delivery situation in 2017, following Airbus’s disclosure that the carrier will defer six A380s due next year, and another six due in 2018. The airline is still set, however, to receive a number of A380s as well as Boeing 777s in 2017.

Poor sales force Airbus to remove its famous trait

    Published on: March, 17, 2017

Airbus is going to modify its impressive staircase on A380 aircraft. The staircase modification together with additional element - wingtips was purposed to decrease the costs and improve fuel efficiency, Reuters reported.

The intended modification seeks to increase passenger capacity adding 40-50 seats, making the double decker capable to load more than 600 people. Those features has are also expected to make flights cheaper to passengers. Therefore, instead of its double staircase and the spiral one at the back, Airbus has to put something more compact.

One of the reasons for the jumbo’s modification is the growing competition from more cost and fuel-efficient smaller narrow jets, powered by two engines. However, there are chances to improve the situation. An industry source told Reuters that mounting of the vertical wingtips could reduce fuel expanses and decrease drag. Some estimates conclude that it is possible to boost efficiency by 2%. What is more, airplane modification could bring additional three tones of the lift load, including payload and larger fuel capacity.

European plane maker Airbus has recently announced that the 12 A380 superjumbo jets – the biggest of its kind – ordered by Emirates will see a delay in delivery. The tardiness is reportedly related to the new agreement Emirates has signed with engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce. The delivery of two batches each measuring six aircraft originally scheduled for 2017 and 2018 has been moved one year to the future.

Airbus has recently delayed plans to modernize the airplane because of cost and decided to product just one aircraft a month as sales were low. But the adjustment programs are only a part of the story, Airbus needs to lower the costs to be able to keep its output rates at 12 a year. At the same moment, company hopes to meet the growth in air trips.

According to Boeing, the era of large jets, such as A380 is to be over soon. Another problem is the expiring license for five A380s which Singapore Airlines are getting rid of, what hasten company to find customers as soon as possible. That is not going to be an easy task given the high cost to rebuild interiors to adjust them for the needs of a new customer.

Emirates announces A380 service to the French Riviera, adds Monaco transfers by helicopter

    • First and only airline to operate an A380 to Nice Cote d’Azur Airport
    • Capacity increase to support the region’s growing business and tourism sectors
    • Supporting job creation by improving connectivity with the rest of the world
    • Eligible passengers to benefit from complimentary Monaco transfers by helicopter*

Dubai, UAE – 23rd March 2017 – Emirates announced today the launch of a daily A380 service to Nice, gateway to the French Riviera and Provence. The daily A380 service will start on 1st July 2017, just in time for the beginning of the summer holiday season. After Paris, Nice becomes Emirates’ second destination in France to welcome the iconic double decker, further stimulating demand for travel to the region.Nice is currently served with a daily flight operated by a Boeing 777-300ER. The deployment of an A380 represents a capacity increase of 44% on the route. With 3633 weekly seats in each direction, Emirates will offer more seats to the Middle East and beyond than any other international airline, highlighting Nice’s importance as part of the airline‘s global network. Enabling an increase in passenger numbers will also result in additional tourism revenues for Nice and the wider region, which in turn will mean boosting the local economy and job creation.
"Emirates started flying to Nice on 15th July 1994, almost 23 years ago. Since then, almost two million passengers have travelled with us on the route, with over 200,000 last year alone. We’re excited to see the city join the other 46 destinations Emirates currently serves with the A380 and look forward to being the first airline to fly this iconic aircraft to Nice," commented Thierry Antinori, Emirates’ Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer. "We expect the A380 service to further grow the number of leisure and business travellers that visit the south of France throughout the year,” added Antinori.
As of 1st July, EK77 will be operated by an A380, leaving Dubai at 0845hrs and arriving in Nice at 1340hrs, while EK78 will depart Nice at 1540hrs and arrive in Dubai at 0010hrs the next day (local times). Passengers travelling to or from the following cities will enjoy optimal A380 to A380 connections in Dubai: Auckland, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Mauritius, Seoul, Shanghai, Sydney, Taipei, Tokyo, and more.
“I am thrilled to welcome the A380, a prestigious and iconic aircraft. Nice will be the only city in France, other than Paris, to boast a scheduled A380 service. The team at Nice Cote d’Azur Airport worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth arrival, from runway optimisation to boarding bridge modernisation. Emirates’ decision to upgrade its daily service to Nice confirms the appeal of our region, important enough to sustain a year-round long-haul flight,” commented Dominique Thillaud, President, Cote D’Azur Airports.
*Travelling to Monaco? Arrive in style with Emirates‘ helicopter transfers offered in partnership with Monacair
As part of its commitment to offering the best travel experience to its passengers, Emirates is working with Monacair to offer helicopter transfers between Nice Airport and Monaco, including a limousine service from Monaco’s heliport to their final destination. The service will be complimentary to First Class passengers, €79 per passenger for Business Class and €109 per passenger for Economy Class.

Airbus develops package of new A380 Cabin Enablers, including “New Forward Stairs” option, for A380 customers

Improving the A380 economics and innovating in passenger comfortCabin space optimisation to accommodate around 80 additional seats
Freeing more cabin floor space for no compromise on comfort level
    Bringing airline significant additional revenue.

    4 APRIL 2017 PRESS RELEASE
Hamburg, Airbus is developing a full spectrum of new Cabin Enablers for customers of its flagship A380 airliner. The latest is the “New Forward Stairs” (NFS) option which was presented at the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in Hamburg. Together these cabin enhancements will make this very efficient and comfortable airliner even better: Overall cabin optimisation is expected to result in the freeing-up more cabin floor space for around 80 additional passengers*. This would bring airlines significant additional revenues.
Dr. Kiran Rao, EVP of Strategy and Marketing at Airbus Commercial Aircraft said: “Continuous improvement of our products is our daily work. This new package for our A380 customers is a smart way to meet airline needs while improving the A380 economics with additional revenues and innovating in passenger comfort.” Dr. Rao added: “Only the A380 has the economies of scale and development potential to efficiently solve the problem of increasing congestion at large airports while providing the best comfort for passengers. The aircraft can also serve fast growing markets and airlines regional airports, so we are adapting the aircraft to meet evolving market needs.”
With this latest proposal of the NFS option, the package of new cabin enablers for the A380 now comprises the following:
New Forward Stairs – 20 more passengers (Business, Premium Economy & Economy Classes)
The NFS involves relocation of the forward stair from Door 1 to Door 2, and combining the entrance of the NFS to the upper deck (going up), with the adjacent staircase to the lower-deck crew-rest (going down). The NFS would make room for up to 20 additional passengers.
Combined Crew-Rest Compartment (CCRC) – three more passengers (Premium Economy)
For the CCRC, the existing flight-crew-rest (behind the cockpit in the mezzanine area at Door 1) is moved down and combined with the cabin crew rest on the lower deck. This innovation frees space for three extra Premium-Economy passengers at the front of the main-deck.
11-abreast 3-5-3 economy layout on the main-deck – 23 more passengers (Economy Class)
Thanks to an innovative seating concept developed by Airbus and its seating partners, Airbus is able to maintain an 18inch seat-width while offering airlines an 11-abreast Economy Class on the main-deck in a ‘3-5-3’ configuration. This enables an increase in capacity of 23 seats – adding significantly to the A380’s revenue-generating potential.
New Aft-Galley Stair Module (AGSM) – 14 more passengers + two food trolleys
The AGSM involves the redesign of the rear-stair from a spiral agreement to a straight/square one. On the main-deck, this allows valuable storage volume for galley modules. Overall the AGSM provides space for 14 more revenue passengers plus two extra food trolleys.
Upper-deck sidewall stowage removal – 10 more passengers (Business Class)
The option to remove the sidewall stowages on the upper-deck increases the wall-to-wall cabin width at foot-rest height – which makes space for up to 10 more business class seats / beds when an angled herring-bone arrangement is used.
Nine-abreast Premium Economy on the main deck – 11 more passengers (Premium Economy)
The A380’s generous main-deck cross section – significantly wider than any other commercial airliner – is allowing seat manufacturers to optimise their Premium Economy (PE) seat designs to create the industry’s most efficient and comfortable PE layout possible. This layout enables 11 more PE seats than in an eight-abreast layout.
Airbus is a global leader in aeronautics, space and related services. In 2016, it generated revenues of €67billion and employed a workforce of around 134,000. Airbus offers the most comprehensive range of passenger airliners from 100 to more than 600 seats. Airbus is also a European leader providing tanker, combat, transport and mission aircraft, as well as Europe’s number one space enterprise and the world’s second largest space business. In helicopters, Airbus provides the most efficient civil and military rotorcraft solutions worldwide.
    Note for Editors:
497 passengers is the airline’s average capacity of the A380s currently in operation today – which are consistently attracting above-average passenger load factors. With all these A380 cabin enablers, the A380 seat count would move from 497 to 575 in four classes, and generate significantly more revenue for airlines.

Questi 4 aerei sostituiranno altrettanti 380.

Airbus ponders lowering production rate on A380

    June 5, 2017, © Leeham Co.:

Airbus “likely” will decide this year to lower production rates below 1/mo in 2019, officials said today during a press event at the IATA Annual General Meeting in Cancun, Mexico.
They declined to indicate what the “likely” rate will be, despite being pressed several times.
John Leahy, COO-Customers, was making the case to reporters that despite a slowdown in order now experienced by the industry, production rates won’t come down.
Due to record backlogs at Airbus, “and Boeing is not that far behind us, we are increasing production,” Leahy said. “We’re moving up to rate 60 [per month] on the single aisle. I’d like to see the rate even higher.
“We’ll be at rate 10 on the A350 we’re stabilizing at rate six on the A330 and we’re looking at the A380 and how to break even at about less than one airplane a month. That’s a unique situation, as you’ll see for a unique airplane.”
    Reporters jumped on the news.

    Decision needed this year

“Yes, it’s likely we may have to go below rate one,” said Didier Evrard, EVP Programmes. “We will continue to study possibilities to go below rate one while keeping the program [at break even] on the financial side.”
Airbus needs orders this year to maintain rate one, the company said., although Leahy said accelerating orders from future years into 2019 could maintain rate one.
“There are various things that can be done, but the important point is to get the airplane to at least break even at a lower production rate to get through a period of softness in the market for large airplanes so that we are there for the airplane in the next decade,” Leahy said. “We think it’s going to be very strong.”
Leahy declined to say what the lower rates are Airbus is studying.
“I’m looking to maintain the rate [1/mo], he said. “Didier is trying to protect if we have to go below that. We don’t lose money on the program.”
